Yes. Custom avatars are allowed. 
To use your own avatar, enter the full http:// URL of the image in the Avatar URL field on your profile.
Avatars must be no more than 100x100 pixels. You can specify the width and height of your avatar in the Avatar Width and Avatar Height fields (also on your profile).
